Hackensack Recognizes New Hires and Promotions of the Hackensack Fire Department

On Tuesday, the city council conducted the formal promotions of several fire officers and the swearing in of many new members who have completed their first year of probation.

The following members were promoted from Lieutenant to Captain John Gargagliano, John McMorrow, and John Ingallinera. Members promoted from Firefighter to Lieutenant were Pete Greco, John Kurz, Jason Peterson, Anthony Riehl, and James Riley.  Firefighters who have completed their probationary period were Seth Brown, Timothy Burns, Christopher Mazzocchi, Justin Mignogna, John Parisik Jr., Steven Pell, Michael Rainville, Daniel Riley, Julio Siguenza, and Shaun Tucker.

These promotions and appointments were made over the last 2 years and this formal ceremony was for the members, families and friends to memorialize the events.  The fire department thanked the city council for hosting the ceremony and extended a special thanks to the members of the public who attended.

  1. Looking at those names it's obvious that most of those are nepotism hires.....the first names change, but the surnames stay the same, decade after decade. Nothing ever changes in Hackensack, and nothing will until the place is bankrupt.

    1. To my knowledge, the Hackensack Fire Department follows Civil Service hiring practices. Are you aware of something the rest of us are not? I for one am proud of our HFD and even prouder that we have children, parents, and grandparents who are dedicated to the service of our community. I see it as a testament to what a wonderful place Hackensack is.

    2. Right, when I see the same surnames, decade after decade, I'm suppose to believe that firefighting aptitude runs in families. Nope, no nepotism or patronage here.

BTW, civil service in this state is a joke......all to easy to game civil service in NJ.

  2. So what if it is nepotism, they had to go through a process. Right, wrong or indifferent it is still a process. As a Hackensack Resident it makes me feel good when I see these men and women who have grown up here in this City, become members of our emergency services.

I really take offense to this comment "anonymous"! my family served in the Hackensack Fire Dept for over 65 yrs, protecting the citizens of Hackensack 24/7/365 a yr! First off, the history of the fire service is one of being in "the family business", not because of neopotism as you choose to call it but a love of the job and this goes for not just career firefighters but volunteer f/f's also! and yes, the process of the HFD is to go thru Civil Service, take a written test, and then a rigorous physical course and then a waiting list to be hired, then a psychiatric and medical exam and interview...then you may be hired...its open to anyone 18-35 yrs old with a high school education.....oh, and remember(if your old enough?) the Hackensack Ford fire where we lost 5 firefighters in 1988? guess what? fire doesn't show or care about "nepotism"! it kills the rich, poor, upper, middle, lower class, doesn't matter ethnic or race or religon... doesn't matter!
